OUR SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY
OUR CLIMATE, OUR CLUB – WHY IT MATTERS

Dear Members,

As a follow-up to last month’s topic on our sustainability journey and the impact of the carbon tax, we’re now turning our attention to a very exciting part of our journey: Solar Energy. We’ll explore what it is, its potential benefits for the Club, and how we are currently investigating its feasibility. We hope you’ll enjoy this next step with us as we continue to work together for a more sustainable future.

What are Solar Panels?

Solar panels are devices that convert sunlight into electricity through the photovoltaic effect. It is made from semiconductor materials like silicon, that react to sunlight to produce electrons that form a current. This direct current (DC) is converted into alternating current (AC) through an inverter, making it useful for powering our Club and appliances.

What It Matters to Our Club

In sunny Singapore, they offer a type of power generation at the point of consumption, off-setting what we draw from the grid. Supplementing the energy our Club needs in operating and serving our members.

Even a modest solar panel installation can lower our electricity bill and lessen our carbon footprint. Savings made can be reinvested to enhancing the facilities and member services of our Club. It also reinforces the Chinese Swimming Club’s commitment to sustainability and places us as an environmentally conscious organisation that all members can be proud of.

Did You Know

According to NEA, Singapore records between 4.5 – 5.8 hours of Peak Sun Hours each day. Since Singapore is near the equator, the length of day is relatively constant throughout the year, and thus so is the amount of sunshine it receives. Daily sunshine hours are mainly influenced by the presence or absence of cloud cover. With February and March typically being the highest sunshine hours; compared with November and December being the least.

Singapore’s solar deployment has grown significantly over the years, from 0.4 MWp in 2008 to 1.6 GWp in Q1 2025, at a rate of about 4% quarter-to-quarter.

How Solar Panels Impact Chinese Swimming Club

Chinese Swimming Club is actively exploring how to optimise a viable solar panel installation, which would meaningfully cut our carbon footprint and help manage our operating costs. This ensures the Club remains financially robust for years to come.
