OUR SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY
OUR CLIMATE, OUR CLUB – WHY IT MATTERS
Dear Members,
Get ready to discover Chinese Swimming Club’s sustainability journey!
We’re excited to launch our new Sustainability Corner, a place where we’ll be sharing a different environmental topic with you every month. To kick things off, our inaugural topic is Carbon Tax.
Join us to see how we’re responding to these challenges by sharing our insights and initiatives to reduce our environmental footprint. We look forward to having you with us on this journey.

What is Carbon Tax?
The carbon tax was first introduced in 2019 at S$ 5/tCO2e for the first five years.

To support Singapore’s net zero target, the carbon tax was raised to S$25/tCO2e from 2024, and $45/tCO2e in 2026, with a view to reaching S$50 – 80/tCO2e by 2030.
Why Carbon Tax
Carbon tax supports Singapore’s transition to a low-carbon economy, by steering producers and consumers away from carbon-intensive goods and services.
In Singapore, this tax is applied to our electricity bills. By pricing pollution, carbon tax encourages businesses to be accountable for their emissions, become more energy-efficient and switch to cleaner, more renewable sources like solar power.

How Carbon Tax Impacts Chinese Swimming Club
Chinese Swimming Club currently pays $0.0103 per kWh, for carbon tax as part of our electricity bills.
Given the Club’s current electricity consumption, by 2026, it estimates to pay between $97,000 to $105,000 for carbon tax per year. And by 2030, this increases to $174,000 and $186,000 for carbon tax per year.
Cutting energy use helps keep costs down, protects the environment, and makes our club a cleaner and healthier place. It also helps us manage the membership fees you pay.
Given Singapore’s emission profile (shown below), where power accounts for more than 36.5% of total emissions, the Chinese Swimming Club is studying the implementation of on-site solar generation to offset our electricity consumption, and various ways to improve our energy efficiency.
